Butterfly House

Butterfly House has been created as a getaway for people to escape to as a home away from home. In addition, a passion project to provide a free respite place for our Lion Hearts Learning families to be able to come and stay for free.

Butterfly House - a home away from home.

Message from the owner Maralyn:

We call it Butterfly House, as butterflies and dragonflies are traditionally symbols of hope and renewal.  Butterfly House is a tribute to my mother, who loved her home and family and who would be honoured that it is being used to give families a place to be a “home away from home” as they explore the attractions of Victor Harbor, the town that she loved. It will accommodate two to three families at once and we hope it will give many people, not just oncology families, much needed respite from the bustle and stress of our modern world.  It is a legacy that we trust will be dedicated to enjoyment and celebration of peace, relaxation and happy family times.

Butterfly House has been set up to be an ideal south coast holiday destination, particularly catering for families. Situated on a quiet street, the property is walking distance to the Victor Harbor main street, cafes, restaurants and shops - not to mention 1km drive or walk to the beach.

With thoughtful interior design throughout the house, the property has an enclosed back yard for the kids to run around safely.

The space

Butterfly House has a renovated kitchen that flows into the dining room. The spacious living room has a smart TV with Netflix for holiday movie nights. The 3 bedrooms consist of the master with a queen bed. Bedrooms 2 has a double bed with a single bunk on top. Bedroom 3 has a double bed with a single bunk on top as well as another bunk bed.

Unlike other holiday houses, we like to give our guests all linens / bedding / bath towels included within the cleaning fee – we do this so you can just arrive and unwind. We hope this little addition makes your vacation more enjoyable.

More about the mission from the owner, Maralyn

This was my mother’s home until she died aged almost 102, when it became mine. Renovating and updating the house became my passion. I wanted to make it a place where the oncology families associated with Lion Hearts Learning, (a charity started by my daughter and her husband and supported by my whole family), could have a holiday in a child-friendly space. Lion Hearts Learning provides free learning playgroups and educational craft packs to children impacted by cancer. Oncology families suffer financially and are generally isolated to a large extent from society as their life revolves around hospital and treatment for several years and chemotherapy destroys a child’s immune system, so they have to be kept safe.

With this in mind, I set out to create a suitable, hygienic, safe and enjoyable space. Many of my mother’s possessions were sold to raise money for Lion Hearts Learning.  My adult children, the grandchildren and members of my extended family became passionate about the project and local tradespeople were wonderful, giving us excellent quotes, service and tradesmanship, for which we are very grateful. My daughter, Sasha, did the interior decorating and manages the property with my son, Nick.

We hope this place becomes a home away from home that holds many beautiful memories for people.
